Delaware Valley Ski Patrol

OEC Information

The NSP (National Ski Patrol) is the primary provider of medical educational programs for the patrollers who care for the snowsports public.  OEC (Outdoor Emergency Care) technicians are trained to provide emergency care for environmental illnesses and injuries, spinal injuries, and ski/snowboard and other outdoor injuries.  All individuals completing this course are given a 3-year certification that notes course completion of all knowledge and skill objectives.  Management personnel at nearly all mountain and nordic resorts in the United States recognize the value of this OEC education program and use the completion of the course as a prerequisite for becoming a patroller.

Dave Mooney did an outstanding job as Instructor of Record organizing, teaching, and coaching both instructors and students for this year's class, all students passing that took the practical test 13 December.  All the visiting Instructors did a fantastic job of presenting the OEC material, evident by the success of the recent graduates.  DVSP's intentions are to conduct an OEC class in 2010 with hopeful use of the ESC School and a return of the OEC Instructors assisted by recent graduates of the DVSP OEC program.  If you do not have the OEC Instructor credential, please consider enrolling in the Instructor Development course, start teaching and get mentored until you receive your instructor's card

A Big Thanks to the 2009 OEC Final Practical Test evaluators and assistants from eight ski areas. As always, I'm indebted to the volunteers of the NJ and EPA Regions who stood (or lay on the ground) in the cold to watch the next generation of patrollers prove themselves worthy to join the ranks of NSP.  We could not have done it with out you!
